SWAN strongly condemns the violent attack against Kemalita Ördek and humiliating treatment by the police

We are sad and angry to learn that on July 5th, Kemalita Ördek, SWAN Steering Committee member, LGBTQI and sex workers’ rights activist and the founder of Red Umbrella Sexual Health and Human Rights Organization in Turkey, was attacked and raped in her own home. Kemalita was subsequently humiliated and discriminated by the police that also failed to secure her personal safety. The perpetrators were set free and therefore Kemalita is in a life threatening situation due to police discrimination and lack of access to justice.

Mistreatment and violence against trans people in Turkey is increasing: 37 murders in Turkey have been recorded between January 2008 and December 2014. A lot of them were sex workers.

SWAN strongly condemns the violent attack against Kemalita Ördek and humiliating treatment by the police. SWAN urges the Turkish authorities to immediately start an investigation, sanction the perpetrators and provide appropriate safety measures to Kemalita.

We demand justice for Kemalita and end to violence against trans people and sex workers in Turkey and globally!
