Today is the International Sex Workers' Day

Today, on 2nd of June 2017, we mark The International Sex Workers’ Day. On this day in 1975 French sex workers occupied the Saint-Nizier church in Lyon for 8 days in a desperate attempt to call attention to their worsened working conditions. On 10th June at 5 o'clock the Church was brutally raided and cleared by police forces.

Since then, the 2nd of June has been celebrated as the beginning of the movement for the sex workers rights. Sex workers and their allies all around the world are marking this day with many different events.

You can find the list of the global events here.

SWAN, by uniting the members in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, is striving to create a society where sex work is decriminalised, where  sex workers can work and live without stigma, violence and discrimination.

As every year, today SWAN is calling to:

  • End the violence against sex workers
  • Decriminalise sex work
  • Include sex workers in making the decisions that affect their lives and work
