Experiences of Humanitarian Action Shared With Colleagues From Nine Cities in Russian Federation

Representatives of various organizations supporting sex workers in 9 cities in the Russian Federation (Astrakhan, Lipetsk, Syktyvkary, Tomsk, Izhevsk, Krasnoyarsk, etc.) met in St. Petersburg on July 27-29. The visit was organized by “AIDS Infoshare” (Moscow), within the program “HIV Prevention Activities among Paid Sex Workers”, which is a part of the “National Priority Health Project 2006”. The meeting was hosted by “Humanitarian Action” and “Stellit”.

The study tour was organized with an aim to transfer the knowledge and experiences the St. Petersburg’s governmental and nongovernmental organizations have in sex workers’ rights advocacy and HIV/AIDS prevention. While the first day of consisted of presentations and discussions, the following two days the guests had an opportunity to have a more detailed insight into the work of their Petersburg colleagues by direct site visits. The participants were divided into three groups according to their specializations: project managers, doctors and social workers. They visited the Center for Social Development and Information PSI, Community of people living with HIV/AIDS, city hospital for treatment of infections and other institutions. The guests also took part in sex workers outreach activities. The study tour won high appraisals of the visiting colleagues.
