Macedonia: Media report on international criticism of involuntary testing of alleged sex workers

Macedonian media reported that “more then 30 international NGOs criticized Macedonian governments’ action” in which in November last year a number of alleged sex workers were detained, involuntarily tested and their identities released to the media.

Macedonian news agency Makfax reported, and numerous media picked up the article about the international outcry against the Macedonian government’s action.
The report says the police raid was criticized in a public letter sent to the government on December 17 by Human Rights Watch, Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and more then 30 other nongovernmental organizations.

The signatories say the government action was violating a number of internationally recognized human rights, among them right to security of the person and right to privacy.

The government is accused of inhuman and degrading treatment of citizens, of perpetuating and rising stigma and intolerance against sex workers.
