Sierra Leone: Clinic for 40 commercial sex workers
The programme took place at the Ministry of Youth and Sports conference hall in Kenema.
The confab, which was themed: 'Run Away from HIV/AIDS' aimed at using sporting activities to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country.
SILDEP Project Coordinator, Samuel David said the clinic was organized to sensitize Commercial Sex Workers on how the disease could be prevented and controlled, especially so when they are actively engaged in the act.
He said HIV/AIDS does not respect any person and it can infect every individual regardless of his or her religion, class or tribe.
"We have targeted the 'How For Do' community because our brothers and sisters in this community are engaged in commercial sex activities. Fortunately we have trained them as facilitators," he said.
He encouraged participants to seek Voluntary Confidential Counseling and Testing Services (VCCT).
Kenema City Council Health Coordinator, Mohamed Nyallah who spoke on the transmission and control of the disease said HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person.
Nyallah noted that the disease could also be transmitted through blood transfusion.
"I am advising you to take the workshop very seriously. You should now practice safe sex as it will prevent you from getting HIV/AIDS," he said.
