French sex workers protest legal brothels
Lawmaker Chantal Brunel says opening brothels in France would take prostitutes off the street and give them medical, financial and legal protection.
Sex workers were invited to the Senate on Wednesday to discuss the issue. Several dozen then marched through the Left Bank carrying red umbrellas.
Sex workers say they aren't interested in the legalization of brothels because they would be working for a "company." They want the repeal of a 2003 law penalizing solicitation, which they say prevents them from working independently in the open.
