Global community of sex workers protest PEPFAR’s harmful policies

July 20, 2010, Vienna – Sex workers’ rights advocates and their allies held a protest against the politics of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The harm is mostly expressed in forcing NGOs to sign the USA's Anti-prostitution Pledge in exchange for funding and to make them turn their backs on sex workers excluding them from prevention programs. On this day, the representatives of the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) addressed international society and the press in order to bring the issue to the spotlight.
“We’re here to demand justice, health care, and safety,” said a sex worker and activist from the United States. “I’m ashamed to be part of a world where sex workers are killed by governments who refuse to provide free condoms.”
Sex worker activists demand revision of PEPFAR that would decriminalize sex work, ensure universal access to HIV services, increase economic and social opportunities for sex workers, and allow for better HIV testing, treatment, and care.
