The initiative for marking this day is coming from Annie Sprinkle (sex worker/porn star later become sexologist) and Sex Workers Outreach Project USA as a memory and peaceful protest in the name of the victims of the murderer from Green River in Seattle, Washington, who was sentenced to 48 life terms and was fined $10,000 for each victim on December 18, 2003.

Since then 17 December has become a global day of activism. On this day sex workers mobilize in resistance to the violence they face as a result of discrimination, abuse and violations of their rights and take the time to remember their colleagues, friends and family who have been victims of violence.

The red umbrella is international symbol of solidarity of the sex workers.
Red is a color of beauty and an umbrella is the resistance to sky’s and humans’ attacks. It symbolizes protection from the abuse sex workers are subjected by the police, pimps, customers, and an ignorant and biased society.
