Transgender Sex Worker in Turkey Sets Precedent in Courts

The first attacker was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment for qualified sexual assault, preventing one’s liberty, verbal assault, and threatening and was immediately sent to prison after sentencing. The second attacker was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment (theft, threatening, verbal assault). The third attacker was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment (physical attack, threatening, verbal assault).

A sex worker Yulia was one of the first who took a public stance against police abuse in August 2008, that ended-up costing her life. It started with her refusal to pay bribes to the police, followed by the police, according to her own report later in that day in a bar, raping her, and hours later she has jumped from a bridge ending her own life. The police investigation concluded that she committed suicide, however the local community believes that she was driven to suicide by the police.

Amelia NGO in Kazakhstan Publish Report on Sex Work

Amelia NGO was founded in 2012 and focuses on:

1. Helping the general population be informed and offer services.

2. Provide psychological, educational and social assistance to individuals in crisis situations (victims of violence, substance abuse cases, children staying in restricted or specialized institutions).

3. Improve access to prevention programmes by vulnerable youth.

Transgender Sex Worker and Activist Murdered in Turkey

Hande Kader was last seen getting in the car of a potential client about a week ago and has not been heard from since. Her friends and partner then reported Hande’s disappearance to the police.

Following the report, police initiated a search and rescue. During the operation, they found a burned body near Zekeriyakoy.

Hande’s partner D. mentioned that Hande was wearing prosthetics which helped identify her body.

It is the latest in a series of hate crimes in Turkey shocking the LGBT and international community.
