Inteview with Zaneta, Slovakia

Then the time came when my work stopped and I urgently needed to support my children. I was also divorcing for which I also needed money. I started to browse in Avize, a publication where I found an ad that called for a “private girlfriend”. At my age! So I gathered my nerve and went, that’s what I say about that! Briefly it is said in these videos that sex workers in Sofia organize a protest against the police activity because recently all outdoor sex workers were detained by the police for 24 hours and were not able to do sex work. They want their profession to be legalized, to pay taxes and to be able to work undisturbed. These are mostly independent sex workers who have no pimps and work for themselves.

What is the cost of legal reform for Ukrainian sex workers?

According to the authors of the bill, right now only city administrative committees (within city executive body) can deal with these cases, the village committees are not authorized to take the case. Since the cases should be addressed by the executive bodies in the location where the person is officially registered, most of cases on individual sex work remain unaddressed because most of fined sex workers come from smaller towns and villages.

Interview with Vantala, Ukraine

AR: What can you say about other sex workers who use drugs in Ukraine?
V: As far as I know, today ¾ of sex workers in Ukraine are «chemically dependent», but there are more sex workers who use alcohol. And there are less of opiate users nowadays, a lot of them died. According to SWAN Coordinator, Aliya Rakhmetova in Budapest : “Police repression and abuse compromises sex workers’ access to law protection and justice and creates a climate of impunity for violence against them. This in turn, fuels violence against sex workers by others. The only way to end such human rights violations is for governments to uphold sex workers’ human rights.”
